It’s been a little over a year since Beyoncé snatched every wig, weave and edge in existence with her groundbreaking 2018 Coachella performance, more appropriately named #BeyChella. Bey has now given us an intimate and in-depth look into the blood, sweat and tears that went in to creating this performance in her new Netflix film, “Homecoming”. The film features footage from Coachella 2018, weekend 1 and 2 along with behind-the-scenes visuals of rehearsals, her bomb ass crew and the journey to Beychella.

Here a four takeaways from the inspiring documentary to keep in mind.

  1. Representation Matters

“You can’t be, what you can’t see.” – Marie Wilson

Showcasing Black and HBCU culture at arguably the whitest music festival in the world was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Making history as the festival’s first black female headliner, Bey made it a mission to show Coachella and the world what they have been missing. In a self-reported 2013 survey, Coachella found that only 4.9% of its festival goers were Black.

“When I decided to do Coachella… instead of me pulling out my flower crown, it was important that I brought our culture to Coachella.” – Beyoncé Knowles Carter

Black culture in essence is American culture. Bey knows this. We all know this. Now take that courage to share your own blackness with the world.

2-    Do Nothing Without Intention

Taking a page from her sister Solange, Beyoncé knew exactly what she was doing with her Beychella performance. She perfectly orchestrated very song arrangement, stage set and dance move to celebrate blackness. In the same way, whatever field or industry you’re in, make sure you know your “why”. Why is it that you do what you do? Intention fuels purpose.

3-    Don’t give up. Period.

“Keep going no matter what” – Reginald Lewis

If there’s one thing Homecoming showed us, Beyoncé worked her ass off to give us the cultural experience of our lifetime. A mother of 3, wife and businesswoman, Bey showed us what real work ethic looks like. Getting back to her normal self after an emergency C-section to deliver her twins, Beyoncé worked effortlessly to get her mind and body right. Balancing work, love and family was not easy but she knew the important contribution her work would bring to us. Remember: what you have to offer the world is bigger than any excuse you have not to.

4-    Together we aspire. Together we achieve.

“Without community, there is no liberation” – Audre Lorde

Homecoming shows us that representation matters and we are only stronger together. Beyoncé knows the power of community and called on the most talented dancers, creatives and singers to create this stunning performance. She understood that to go far, she would have to go together. Putting the culture on her back, she knew she couldn’t do this alone. A good leader is only as good as his her team.

If you haven’t watched it yet, Homecoming is streaming now on Netflix. In true Beyoncé fashion, the queen was extra generous and blessed us with Homecoming: The Live Album featuring 40 tracks from her Coachella performance including a rendition of Frankie Beverly and Maze’s cookout classic “Before I Let Go.”

Always remember: You matter. We matter. Our culture matters.
