Melania Trump

The hands-down most controversial moment of last night's Republican National Convention kick off came from Melania Trump, the wife of the presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. The First Lady hopeful delivered a speech about her love for her native Slovenia, her husband and clearly Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech. Melania's remarks came under fire not for profane, offensive (politically incorrect) nor absurd language as her husband is known for but for plagiarism.

Yup, plagiarism.

For those who don't remember what plagiarism is, let's go back to school real quick.

Remember in college when your professor made you write a 10 page research paper on something you really didn't care about? When you would search long and hard to acquire such information to fill up all the blank space left under your header because your own knowledge wouldn't suffice? Yeah, me too. You finally get enough information to almost fulfill the 10 page requirement but you're short a couple paragraphs. You look at your watch, scroll through Twitter, take a nap and then look at your watch again only to find that it's 11:30 pm and your essay is due in exactly 30 minutes. Desperately, you copy and paste sections of already published relevant work to your assignment. Because you don't want to completely copy someone's work verbatim, you reorder a couple words and omit those you don't understand. Finally, you're done and all is great again in the world. Right?

In college, plagiarism is a severely punishable offense that can lead to failing a class  and even worse expulsion! This made up scenario actually happened on a much greater scale: Melania Trump's 2016 RNC speech.  I don't want to get too political but it concerns me that a woman looking to be the First Lady of our nation used Michelle Obama (the wide of her husband's mortal enemy) statements on hard work and integrity and claimed them to be her own. There's so many things wrong with this but so many right things came out of it: MEMES!

What would controversy be without the help of social media? Not a got damn thing.
