We’re almost two months into 2018, and the year is already looking as if we have some major changes heading towards society’s way - economically, spiritually, and culturally. This ascension to a new way of existing has ignited a sacred flame in many athletes, entrepreneurs, and artists who have took matters into their own hands to be the change they would like to see; thus ushering in the new age ‘Black Renaissance’. There’s been plenty moments that has expedited this resurgence. Here are just five entities that has acted as a catalyst for this renaissance:
1. Black Privilege
Let’s start with “Black Privilege”. Charlamagne The God pens a profound book where he takes us down a path of self-discovery, enlightenment, and accountability, delivering 8 principles that you can use as a foundation to inner-transformation. ‘The God’ paints the book in a light that allows all inner-city youth to understand these 8 principles, for the stories that back these principles relate to scenarios countless individuals have been in. Each principle is based off the experiences, trials & tribulations that Charlamagne has been through on his quest to success; crediting this success with the spiritual essence the books intends to remind us of, in which we all can tap into at any given moment. Once this foundation is set, one may then be able to apply their mind and energy to create opportunities for themselves at times deemed impossible - “Black Privilege”. This concept has multiple layers of dimensions to it that becomes limitless once respected and applied consistently. Look no further than this book for an introduction to the ‘Black Renaissance’.
2. Revolt TV Network
A platform that assists Charlamagne in being a creator, is also apart of this new age ‘Black Renaissance’ - REVOLT Network. Charlamagne The God is ⅓ of ‘The Breakfast Club’ (including Angela Yee & DJ Envy) on Power 105.1’s radio station, now affiliated with REVOLT Network - which is an African-American owned television network, headed by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. From ‘The Breakfast Club’ to shows like ‘Drink Champs’ (hosted by N.O.R.E. & DJ EFN) that brings in the legends of hip-hop to converse & celebrate their tenure in the industry, REVOLT has created a network that everyone and anyone from any walk of life, can call home to for their new age media. ‘The Breakfast Club’ sat down with Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who stated that she was also apart of bringing the network to light, making sure cable corporations hold up their end of the bargain, in hosting more minority owned networks. REVOLT may not be the first African-American owned cable network, but it is the first to feature such high-powered individuals that not just brought it to light, but also built it from the ground up. REVOLT has now become a pioneer of media in this digital age of social media, with greater accomplishments on the horizon. Being a leader of the renaissance, REVOLT’s owner, Diddy is also affiliated with our next entity, the Black Eyed Peas comic book “Masters of The Sun”.
3. Masters of the Sun
“Masters of the Sun” was brought to fruition with the help of the Black Eyed Peas and Marvel Studios, to deliver the first ‘VR’ (virtual reality) comic book. Imagine a world where you not only have to learn to coexist but also learn to defend yourselves from the invasion of an ancient alien order, infiltrating your city on a quest for vengeance. That’s exactly where the “Masters of The Sun” takes us. With an alien God threatening to continue a ‘Black Curse’ - a curse that turns gangsters into zombies, Zulu X and his team goes on an epic adventure to defend their city from the invasion. “Masters of The Sun” combines ancient wisdom and practical street smarts in a way that sheds light on the true dynamics and capabilities of the people in inner-city communities. Being in comic book/virtual reality form opens the door for the youth to be able to attach and grow with a comic book series similar to their environment. It gives children an escape that they can gain knowledge from. The Black Eyed Peas & Marvel’s decision to include new exciting technology in the book, puts both the Peas & Marvel in a highly pioneering space.
4. Black Panther
Marvel intensifies their position in this space by linking up with Ryan Coogler to bring another one of their pioneering books to the motion picture world - “Black Panther”. Not only are they bringing this revolutionary work to light, the fashion in how this motion picture came together is a showcase of times we are in. Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Danai Gurira, and Daniel Kaluuya are just a few of the talented stars that make up the cast of this film. The Black Panther character (played by Boseman) may be the powerful lead, but if you take a closer look, the power of the film is led by the women who must intervene and balance the egos that are clashing over a generational vendetta caused by the death of Erik Killmonger’s father (Erik Killmonger being played by Michael B. Jordan). This motion picture is a spiritual excursion. I’ll save the juice on the movie for a review, for now, make sure you add this to your ‘Black Renaissance’ startup kit. Don’t forget to also checkout the ‘Black Panther’ soundtrack, coordinated by 12x Grammy award winner - Kendrick Lamar. Now that we got a motion picture in the bag, let’s move on to a sonic film - “4:44”.
On this Grammy nominated project, Jay Z takes his listeners on a 10-song journey where he clashes with his demons, conquers the ego and spreads out a few keys we all can learn and grow from. As they say - “Only a fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others”; on the album, Jay Z sheds light on a few of his faults and predicaments that could’ve led to his downfall, giving the fan every opportunity to use his life, as a life lesson. He delivers this knowledgeable album all while keeping ignorance at a minimum, and the life lessons wrapped with in a cloud of high-class. He paints a picture of what wealth could be if we all live for the generations that will succeed us. This album is luxury to the ears and gemstones to the mind; making it the soundtrack to the ‘Black Renaissance’ movement; so add this to your kit and get activated!
